A Defensive Core Fund for the Tougher Times Ahead

The recent cut in interest rates and additional Quantitative Easing (QE) announced by the Bank of England has helped stock and bond prices to rally sharply after the initial post-referendum sell-off.

It is too early to assess the impact of Brexit on the UK economy, although survey data suggest that the decision to leave the EU has had a big impact on the construction industry and wider jobs market. When the economic data starts to come through it could easily undermine investor confidence, with some predicting another recession.

In this sort of scenario it would be sensible to bank some of your recent profits and reduce the risk in your portfolio.   • The FTSE 100 closed the day at 6,920.87, an increase of 6.16 points.
  • The FTSE 250 rose 119.27 points to finish at 17,926.83
  • The FTSE All Share climbed 7.10 points to finish at 3,764.42.
  • The FTSE AIM All Share finished at 783.50, up by 3.58 points.

Shares in FTSE 250 hospitality outfit Restaurant Group (RTN) surged 11.23% to 419.10p after the company announced the appointment of former Paddy Power chief Andy McCue as CEO with effect from 19th September. Current boss Danny Breithaupt is stepping down with immediate effect. Over Mr Breithaupt's two years as CEO, shares in Restaurant Group have dropped by 44%.

Animal genetics specialist Genus (GNS) saw its shares fall by 8.05% to 1,782p after a US jury found that Genus subsidiary ABS had materially breached a confidentiality agreement between itself and Sexing Technologies. The court found that Sexing Technologies had maintained a monopoly, but Genus were unable to show that they had been harmed by this. The financial outcomes of the case are as yet unclear.

E-commerce systems developer CloudBuy (CBUY) said its revenues fell 11% to £785,000 during the six months ended 30th June. However, the loss before tax narrowed to £2.4 million, from £3.1 million in the comparative period, and management said that the company's full year results should be in line with those of the previous year. Shares in CloudBuy climbed 1.75% to 7.25p.
